7NEWS Australia published this video item, entitled “Bikies rode the ghost train on the night of the fatal Luna Park fire | 7NEWS” – below is their description.
The NSW coroner is considering a fresh inquest into a fatal fire at Sydney’s Luna Park in 1979.
Seven people including six boys were killed in the blaze while riding the theme park’s ghost train.
In 1989, 7NEWS reporter Felicity Moffatt revealed that of the 63 people who were employed at Luna Park on the night of the fire, only 9 were interviewed by police.
The National Crime Authority (NCA) found that the police investigation into the fatal fire was ‘grossly inadequate”, and that police were “half-hearted” in their approach.
Artist Martin Sharp, whose passion for knowing what really happened on the night of the fire, was described in the NCA report as having a ‘warped judgement’ because he was ‘obsessed’ with the fire.
The NCA concluded that what caused the fire would remain a mystery – this was despite rumours that Abe Saffron had organised for a bikie gang to burn down Luna Park’s Ghost Train so that he could gain control of the lucrative lease on the park.
