U.S. President Joe Biden and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan met in Brussels on Monday to discuss strained relations between the two allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The most challenging problem has been Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 systems, a rift that also divides NATO. Washington has already removed Ankara from the F-35 fighter jet program and imposed sanctions over the acquisition.

Erdogan said Turkey bought the S-400 system after the U.S. denied the sale of the Patriots system to his country.

The two presidents discussed Turkey’s role in Afghanistan as a NATO ally, here Ankara has offered to guard and operate Kabul airport after U.S. and NATO forces withdraw in coming weeks.

Both presidents described the meeting as successful and productive.
