President Joe Biden is calling on Americans to overcome their divisions, declaring in his first address in office that “without unity, there is no peace.”

Speaking on the West front of the U.S. Capitol shortly after being sworn in as the nation’s 46th president, Biden pledged that he would be honest with the country as it continues to confront difficulties, saying that leaders have an obligation “to defend the truth and defeat the lies.”

Biden said his “whole soul is in this, bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation.” And he asked every American to join him in the cause.

The new president said unity may “sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days.” But striking the optimistic tone he’s become known for, Biden said with unity, the country “can do great things.”
