U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to deliver remarks alongside Vice-President Kamala Harris and associate justice-designate of the Supreme Court Ketanji Brown Jackson on Friday after what is being lauded as her historic confirmation to the nation’s highest court.
The 51-year-old federal appeals court judge will be the third Black justice once confirmed, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, and the sixth woman to hold the position.
Once she takes her seat on the bench, she will be one of four women on the court, the highest number SCOTUS has seen in its history at one time. She will assume the role once Stephen Breyer retires at the end of the court’s current term.
In the end, Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney joined all 48 Democrats, and two Independents who caucus with the Democrats, to confirm Jackson to the court.
