Global News published this video item, entitled “Biden inauguration: Young poet captures “bruised, but whole” US in powerful poem” – below is their description.
Amanda Gorman, the first national poet laureate of the U.S. and youngest inaugural poet, spoke during the inauguration of President Joe Biden on Wednesday and offered a hopeful vision for a deeply divided country, saying they can move to be a “bruised, but whole” nation.
The poem, “The Hill We Climb,” told the crowd and those watching from home that being American “is more than a pride we inherit. It’s the past we step into and how we repair it.” She spoke on the steps of the Capitol where two weeks ago, supporters of President Donald Trump stormed inside as lawmakers were counting the results of the presidential election.
“While democracy can be temporarily delayed, it can never be permanently defeated,” she stressed. “Let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left. We will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one.”
Gorman was named the first U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017.
