U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to speak Thursday after Israel and Hamas announced a cease-fire, bringing a pause to 11 days of fighting that caused widespread destruction in the Gaza Strip and beyond.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel accepted the Egyptian proposal after a late-night meeting with his security cabinet. Hamas quickly followed suit and said it would honour the deal. The cease-fire is expected to take effect at 2 a.m. local time, roughly three hours after the announcement.
Earlier this week, Biden, alongside international partners, had made efforts to reach a cease-fire, though on Wednesday Netanyahu had vowed to press ahead with the fierce offensive in the Gaza Strip and it raised concerns whether the rift between the two close allies could complicate efforts.
