Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “Berejiklian has been ‘best by a long shot’ yet she’s in the media’s ‘firing line'” – below is their description.
The only premier who has done a “proper job” during the coronavirus pandemic is Gladys Berejiklian yet she is the one “in the firing line” by the media at the moment says Sky News host Chris Kenny. Mr Kenny said Australians have been “poorly served” by state governments this year as they have run their “own shows on pandemic management”. “When state governments needed to be wise, cool and competent, most of them have been panicked, hysterical and bungling,” he said. However, Mr Kenny said the best of the state governments “by a long shot” has been under Premier Gladys Berejiklian in New South Wales. “New South Wales has carried the biggest load on quarantine, managed it well, dealt with some serious clusters and kept the state, its schools and businesses and its communities as open as possible all year”. “And its borders, I should add”. Mr Kenny said a remarkable aspect of the pandemic this year has been the media’s performance. “Journalists have tended to support their premiers, especially in their home states, premiers have enjoyed public and media support even when they have completely stuffed up”. “We saw that especially in Victoria. “This is partly because the media is just as alarmist and panic stricken as the premiers, the journos love to whip up fear about the virus, talking about every infection as if it is a serious case or even a fatality”. He said “we have six premiers in this country” with five of them having failed to do right thing by the nation in their pandemic response. “But the one in the firing line at the moment, the one the media has in their sights, is the only one who has done a proper job”. It comes after New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has revealed she did not self-isolate while awaiting coronavirus test results and went about her daily activities as normal. “Berejiklian made an error, she has since admitted that,” Mr Kenny said. “But her mistake is a tiny footnote on the endless catalogue of catastrophic blunders, willful overreactions and borders obstinance from the other premiers. “Perhaps the media just likes an easy hit, an error of judgement that they can all understand, rather than actually delving into the real dilemmas and difficult consequences of pandemic mismanagement elsewhere in the country.”
