Belarus’ president facing his toughest challenge in years in country’s election | ABC News

He’s sometimes described as Europe’s last dictator. And the President of Belarus, who’s ruled the former Soviet state since 1994, is facing his toughest challenge in years.

Alexander Lukashenko is seeking a sixth term in office.

But, in today’s election, he’s up against a popular rival – a 37-year-old woman who is running in place of her jailed husband.
