Belarus opposition candidate Tikhanovskaya releases video from Lithuania | DW News

The opposition candidate in Belarus’s presidential election has left the country. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is now in neighboring Lithuania, where she has joined her children. She’d sent them there before the vote – and before she accused President Alexander Lukashenko of rigging the election result. Germany has called on the European Union to consider imposing sanctions on Belarus, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the vote had been neither free nor fair. But Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated President Lukashenko on his win. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya had given no hint that she was about to leave the country.
