U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar spent his first full day in Taiwan today. He met with Taiwan’s chief official in charge of health and welfare, Chen Shih-chung, and they witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on health cooperation. Azar said his visit shows U.S. recognition of friendship and partnership with Taiwan, and he praised the local authorities for their handling of the pandemic. It’s the first high-level visit to the island by an American official since China and the United States established diplomatic ties in 1979. China has condemned the visit.
