B.C. government and wildfire officials are expected to provide an update on the ongoing wildfire situation in the province on Friday.
Premier John Horgan and Katrine Conroy, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resources Operations and Rural Development, are holding the briefing as part of their visit to the area to meet with Logan Lake fire officials and community members.
As of Thursday at 7 p.m. local time, 238 wildfires were burning. There are also 35 evacuation orders issued for 3,476 properties, with another 83 evacuation alerts for 7,699 properties. A total of 864,473 hectares have burned.
Todd Nessman, wildfire operations manager with the B.C. Wildfire Service, said in an update on Thursday that the situation in British Columbia is “trending in the right direction” and that he expects to see the number of alerts and evacuation orders in the region lifted over time.
However, he said there are still concerns about some of the larger fires, like the White Rock Lake fire, and cautioned residents against returning to their homes too early.
Nessman also confirmed that a firefighter had been injured battling the White Rock Lake fire in the Okanagan after tumbling down a steep slope. He was driven to hospital, he said, adding that injuries were not “as serious as initially feared.”
