Battle for Mosul: Iraqi forces face stiff resistance from ISIL

Iraqi troops are facing stiff resistance from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) as they attempt to advance further into the groups’ stronghold of Mosul.

ISIL fighters launched ferocious counter-attacks in territory Iraqi special forces claimed to have “liberated,” targeting Iraqi troops with mortars and suicide car bombs.

ISIL has also been defending the city centre with berms, bombs, and burning oil trenches.

Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal reports from northern Iraq.
