Thailand’s capital Bangkok closed more than 30 types of businesses and services on Monday, including cinemas, parks, zoos, bars, pools and massage parlors as authorities try to curb an alarming third wave of COVID-19 infections.
A 20,000 baht (USD $635) fine for not wearing a mask in public has also been introduced.
Some small business owners in Bangkok were critical of the new lockdown measures. Ungkana Kesornphud, who owns a massage shop, said she thinks the government “shouldn’t have waited until there was a new outbreak to come up with the (current) protective regulations which totally affect all kinds of businesses.”
Thailand reported 2,048 new cases Monday, bringing its total infections to 57,508 and 148 coronavirus-related fatalities. Out of Monday’s cases, 901 were in Bangkok, which has been the epicentre of the outbreak.
