Energy Minister Angus Taylor says unless countries committed to reducing emissions can do so without imposing huge costs on their populations the global climate target cannot be achieved. Former United States secretary of state John Kerry has been appointed – by President-elect Joe Biden – to the role of special presidential envoy for the climate, and this morning announced he would be asking allies to make greater contributions to improving the climate. “Well we’re investing in renewables four times faster than the United States so we really look forward to the United Sates playing catch-up on this,” Mr Taylor told Sky News. He said Australia was committed to “working together with other allies across the world … to make sure we get balance in our energy systems, that we have the technologies that are working and that we can actually bring down emissions without taxing people”. “Without raising the price of electricity, without imposing costs on consumers and economic burdens,” he said. “We will not get there globally unless we are able to do that, because countries like India and the other parts of the developing world will not, will not impose big economic burdens on their population, we can’t expect them too. “And that means technology, not taxation, that’s our focus. “That’s been the United States’ focus, technology is absolutely central to the United States economy and has been for a long while, so we look forward to working with them very closely.”
