A sweeping review of Australia’s national intelligence laws is recommending an overhaul of electronic surveillance powers, labelling the current situation ‘a dog’s breakfast’.
The inquiry was undertaken by former ASIO boss Dennis Richardson, who made more than 200 recommendations in a 1,600 page report.
Mr Richardson said telecommunications interception legislation hasn’t kept up with the incredible fast pace of technological advancement.
Attorney-General Christian Porter said the original act was only 19 pages long when it first passed Parliament more than 40 years ago.
