Australia’s COVID-19 emergency continues to escalate as the city of Sydney in New South Wales is expected to see its stay-at-home order likely extended past July 30, with 136 new cases reported in the state on Friday – a new record for 2021.
While the country has done relatively well during the pandemic, with just over 32,500 cases and 916 deaths, an outbreak in Sydney last month caused cases to drastically rise for the region, with a vaccination rollout lagging.
Though Prime Minister Scott Morrison said almost 200,000 doses of the vaccine were delivered Thursday, only about 15 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated and just 37 per cent have at least once dose. Sean Previl reports.
