Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Tuesday the country will not return to lockdown in the wake of the omicron Covid-19 variant.

The Australian government had announced that it would delay plans to relax border restrictions by at least two weeks, as the country reported its fifth case of the new variant.

But Morrison told reporters in Canberra that the measures are temporary to enable authorities to learn more about the variant.

He said that Australia will be open for Christmas and into 2022.

Australia also delayed by two weeks the travel bubbles with South Korea and Japan.

New South Wales state authorities reported on Sunday that two travelers from South Africa to Sydney had become Australia’s first cases of the new omicron variant.
