At least 12 people were killed this weekend in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu after militants linked to al-Qaida attacked a hotel, with authorities battling nearly 20 hours since the attack began to free hostages that were taken.

According to reports, the attackers blasted their way into the Hayat Hotel on Friday evening, using two initial car bombs before opening fire in an attack that Somalia’s al-Shabaab insurgents have claimed responsibility for.

Friday’s assault was the first major attack since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took office in May.
