Besides the loss of lives, the other cost of this COVID-19 pandemic is the loss of livelihoods.
The Philippines counts as an emerging economy. Much of its workforce is in the informal sector, an entire segment of society now out of work and with no income because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown.
Some of the 10 million OFWs, or overseas Filipinos workers, have now come home due to job cuts, like one of the crew members of the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined at Yokohama. He was infected by the coronavirus and recovered; but will he survive being out of a job now that the cruise ship industry is badly hit?
Barnaby Lo also meets a construction worker and a nurse who have found themselves in limbo due to this outbreak.
