Hawker centers are part of the everyday life in Singapore. It’s such an integral way of life in Singapore that it has been recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance; it’s now on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the first of its kind in the country. But this culture is under threat – many hawkers are aging, and being a hawker is not a typical career choice for youngsters. CGTN’s Miro Lu visits two famous hawker brands – Cho Kee Wanton Noodles, a multi-generational hawker stall, and Hawker Chan Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodles, a Michelin-Star award winner – to find out how they are trying to preserve their legacy.

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign island city-state in maritime Southeast Asia.

The country’s territory is composed of one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet, the combined area of which has increased by 25% since the country’s independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects. It has the second greatest population density in the world. The country has almost 5.7 million residents, 61% (3.4 million) of whom are Singaporean citizens. There are four official languages of Singapore: English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil; with English being the lingua franca.
