The pandemic has disrupted food supply chains, raising awareness of the issue of food security. But more recent events such as the Ukraine conflict, and the longer-term challenges of climate change, have been disrupting supplies and driving up prices for the most common form of food protein, chickens.
Malaysia is one of the world’s biggest consumers of chickens per capita, but recently, it has found itself short of chickens. So much so that Malaysia’s government banned the export of chickens, a policy which had a big impact on neighbor Singapore, which sources a third of its chickens from Malaysia. Rian Maelzer investigates the reasons behind Malaysia’s chicken shortage.
