Ladakh is one of the highest cold deserts in the world. Many residents there are farmers, relying on meltwater from glaciers nearby for water. But in recent years, due to climate change, they have been facing a water crisis as several spring sources have dried up. Some families have been forced to move away due to the lack of water. The issue is not just threatening their way of life. It’s also affecting deep-rooted traditions and legacies.
But there’s a sliver of hope in the form of an “ice stupa,” an artificial glacier invented by Ladakhi engineer Sonam Wangchuk, who wants to safeguard these climate-vulnerable communities. These artificial glaciers will melt and provide water in warmer seasons, and many communities are banking on this. However, there are limitations to this solution. How much water can the “ice stupas” provide? And how sustainable are they?
