A new report says the Chinese government’s disinformation campaign on the treatment of the Uyghur ethnic minority extends well beyond China’s borders. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute says China is monitoring and harassing members of the Uyghur community that live abroad, while also infiltrating community groups to spread disinformation about the Xinjiang province. The report’s co-author, La Trobe professor James Leibold, tells The World these actions can lead to the whitewashing of human rights abuses in the region.
