As the US and European countries record hundreds of thousands of infections from the Omicron Covid-19 variant ahead of the holiday season, in the Asia-Pacific region, cases remain relatively low. Many countries have been taking varying approaches to battling the new Covid-19 variant. Data has shown that the AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Sinopharm vaccines cannot stop Omicron infections six months after being administered. While China is doubling down on its zero-Covid approach, in Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison vowed on December 21, 2021, to move away from lockdowns. New Zealand meanwhile said that it was pushing back a phased border opening to January after detecting 22 cases of Omicron in international arrivals.
