Southeast Asian leaders said Saturday they had agreed on a plan with Myanmar’s military chief to end the crisis in the violence-hit nation following a meeting between leaders of the Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) and senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing.
The plan included an immediate end to the violence in Myanmar, and accepting humanitarian assistance. Since the military coup in February, an estimated 745 people have been killed, according to monitors. ASEAN leaders also wanted the release of political prisoners.
“We did not expect that the meeting would go well, our proposals would be accepted, the Myanmar general in his response did not reject (them),” Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said following the meeting. “And hence, this is very encouraging progress.”
According to a statement from the country of Brunei, the chair of ASEAN, a consensus was reached on five points — ending violence, a constructive dialogue among all parties, a special ASEAN envoy to facilitate dialogue, acceptance of aid and a visit by the envoy to Myanmar.
