An armed man has been shot by police on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway after what a witness described as a “stand-off”.
Victoria Police said officers were called to the on-ramp of the freeway at the Eastlink interchange at Dandenong North following initial reports that a man was armed about 9:30am.
“It is believed responding officers were negotiating with the man when he was shot by police and died at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.
“Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident which will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when a police firearm is discharged.”
A witness who identified himself as Ben called into ABC Radio Melbourne earlier and described the incident as “stand-off” between a man aged about 50 or 60 and police.
“They had guns drawn on the assailant,” Ben said.
“I don’t know if it was a pursuit and they have pulled him up over there or why he’s in that position.”
A VicTraffic alert said: “Emergency services are on scene and directing traffic. If you’re heading towards Melbourne from the south-east, exit the Monash Freeway and use the Princes Highway instead. Allow extra time.”
