Argentina became the first country in Latin America to authorize identification documents for non-binary people on Wednesday.

National identity cards and passports will feature an ‘X’ in place of the traditional ‘M’ or ‘F’ gender descriptors.

“Humanity had to come a long way to understand that there was a whole, male, female and non-binary”, said president Alberto Fernandez during the morning public announcement.

Non-binary people are those who do not recognize themselves as either male or female.

Globally, Canada, New Zealand and Australia have adopted similar measures.

Argentina is once again at the forefront in the region in the expansion of rights for sexual minorities after the approval of the law on equal marriage in 2010 and the law on gender identity in 2012.

It also decriminalised abortion and implemented a labour quota for transgender people.
