AOC Blames ‘Absurdly Cruel’ U.S. Embargo for Cuba Protests

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday voiced her support for protesters demanding freedom from Cuba’s communist regime.

The outspoken lawmaker blamed US sanctions for the current unrest in the island nation.

“The embargo, the US embargo is absurdly cruel. And like other US policies, particularly other US policies targeting Latin Americans and Latinos, the cruelty is the point,” Ocasio-Cortez said at a virtual town hall meeting.

Thousands took to the streets across Cuba last weekend to protest chronic shortages of basic goods, curbs on civil liberties and the government’s handling of a worsening coronavirus outbreak, marking the most significant unrest in decades.

The rare wave of demonstrations against the country’s communist government has been fanned by a deepening economic crisis worsened by the pandemic.

COVID-19 has devastated the country’s tourism industry, sending Cuba’s economy into a deep slump.

President Biden said Thursday there are several areas of humanitarian aid he would consider for the people of Cuba.
