Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, spared with Sen. Rand. Paul (R) Kentucky on Tuesday during a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing to discuss the ongoing federal response to Covid-19.

Top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci says we are at a “critical turning point” with the coronavirus and it will depend on continued vaccination to get us back to some form of normality.

“We are in a race between the vaccine and the virus, if left to its own devices, will continue to surge based on experience thus far in this country and globally,” said Fauci.

“I feel confident that if we continue to vaccinate people at the rate that we’re doing, that we will very soon have a situation where we will have so few infections in this country, we will begin to return to normality that all of us desire so much.”

His comments came during a Senate HELP Committee hearing on federal COVID-19 response Tuesday.

Currently vaccine supply in the country has become greater as the demand has slowed.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky is “imploring everyone to get a COVID vaccine” as soon as possible as a way to “end this pandemic.”

Allergies are a number of conditions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to typically harmless substances in the environment. These include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include red eyes, an itchy rash, sneezing, a runny nose, shortness of breath, or swelling.

Common allergens include pollen and certain foods. Metals and other substances may also cause problems. Food, insect stings, and medications are common causes of severe reactions. Their development is due to both genetic and environmental factors.

Treatments for allergies include the avoidance of known allergens and the use of medications such as steroids and antihistamines. In severe reactions injectable adrenaline (epinephrine) is recommended.

Allergies are common. In the developed world, about 20% of people are affected by allergic rhinitis, about 6% of people have at least one food allergy, and about 20% have atopic dermatitis at some point in time. Depending on the country about 1–18% of people have asthma. Anaphylaxis occurs in between 0.05–2% of people.
