Andrew Scheer delivered his final speech as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada at a convention on Sunday, where the party will announce its new leader.
“I am struck by the determination, strength and resilience of our party,” he said.
He quickly turned to the results of the 2019 election, focusing on the gains the party made despite failing to topple the Liberal government. Scheer also took aim at the mainstream media in his address, claiming unfair coverage.
Scheer also compared the rhetoric of the left-leaning Liberals to eastern European communist nations of the 1980s, stating that although their policies “were supposed to help the poor and promote equality,” but instead caused “misery.”
Toronto lawyer Leslyn Lewis, former Nova Scotia MP Peter MacKay, and current Ontario MPs Erin O’Toole and Derek Sloan are vying for the party’s top job.
The results of the leadership race were repeatedly delayed after technical issues with some of the machines used in the ballot counting process.
