Exporting homegrown pop culture has become something of an art in South Korea, as K-pop and K-dramas seduce foreign markets from South East Asia to Latin America. The phenomenon has its own name: “Hallyu”, which loosely translates as “The Korean Wave”. In recent years Korean cinema has become a more high-brow ambassador for the country’s artistic output, with directors like Park Chan-Wook and Bong Joon-ho scooping awards at international film festivals.
Kim Ki-duk was the first Korean filmmaker to pick up prizes at festivals in Cannes, Berlin and Venice. Olivia Salazar-Winspear sits down with him to talk about the challenges of tackling political issues on the big screen. And we head outside of Seoul to check out a K-drama shoot: these television series are bringing South Korean actors and South Korean stories to living rooms across the world.
