Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed said “Haiti has had difficult times in the past. It is living through difficult times now.”

She told the General Assembly that the United Nations “stands with Haitians in the spirit of solidarity and partnership,” stressing that this partnership “is grounded in helping moving Haiti from emergency approach es to long-lasting solutions; from assistance to investment and cooperation for sustainable development, democracy, and an opportunity for all.”

Mohammed said the same values that made Haiti “the first independent Caribbean state by freeing itself from slavery and colonial control” over 200 years ago, “will see Haiti and its people through these trying times to a future of lasting peace and prosperity for all.”

In This Story: Haiti

Haiti is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east. Though it’s still recovering from a 2010 earthquake, many of Haiti’s landmarks dating to the early 19th century remain intact. These include Citadelle la Ferrière, a mountaintop fortress.

Jean-Jacques Dessalines (later Emperor Jacques I), defeated Napoleon Bonaparte’s forces and declared Haiti’s sovereignty on 1 January 1804.

Haiti became the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt. Apart from Alexandre Pétion, the first President of the Republic, all of Haiti’s first leaders were former slaves.
