Current leader and Premier Jason Kenney announced in May that he would resign after receiving 51 per cent approval in a leadership review. Kenney then announced he would step down when a new leader was chosen.
Former Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith is seen as the perceived front-runner. Other candidates include Smith’s successor in the Wildrose Party Brian Jean, former Kenney cabinet ministers Travis Toews, Leela Aheer, Rajan Sawhney, and Rebecca Schulz; and former caucus member Todd Loewen.
