Alberta has stopped administering first doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the province’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw the change is being made “based on global supply challenges.”
The remaining supply of the vaccine we be available for second doses or anyone who may have a contraindication to mRNA vaccines like the Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
All future first dose vaccines in the province will be booked utilizing Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, unless there is a contraindication.
Dr. Hinshaw said on Tuesday that “no decision have been made” on whether Albertans who received a first dose of AstraZenca vaccine could be able to receive an mRNA vaccine for the second dose.
“We are reviewing all the available evidence, and awaiting the results of clinical trials in the U.K.” Dr. Hinshaw continued.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said on Tuesday that it’s expected more than 270,000 doses of vaccine will be administered in the next seven days. Alberta recorded an immunization record on May 6, with 59,492 doses of vaccine going into arms in just one day.
By Wednesday, Kenney said two million COVID-19 shots will have been given to Albertans, calling it a “big milestone for our province.”
