Global News published this video item, entitled “Alberta firefighter marks 70 years on the job, becomes longest-serving in Canada” – below is their description.

A volunteer firefighter in Alberta set a national record when he became Canada’s longest-serving person on the job, hitting the 70-year mark with just under 26,000 days of service.

Robert Mitchell joined the Lamont Fire Department in September 1951, saying he was just out of high school and “didn’t know what I was going to do — go to university or join the Air Force.” He instead decided to stick it out in Lamont and now his tenure has landed him in the record books. It also saw him surpass Fort Saskatchewan’s Walter Thomas, who previously held the record.

Nicole Stillger talks to Mitchell about his career, and finds out what the people he works with have to say.
