University of Alberta virologist Michael Houghton, along with Americans Harvey Alter and Charles Rice, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering hepatitis C. Not only did they help identify and isolate the virus, Houghton and his colleagues have developed a vaccine soon to enter clinical trials that could lead to the end of the virus that kills 400,000 people a year.
