Ahmaud Arbery’s family reacts as killer sentenced to life for federal hate crime

Global News published this video item, entitled “Ahmaud Arbery’s family reacts as killer sentenced to life for federal hate crime” – below is their description.

Ahmaud Arbery’s family spoke on Monday after Travis McMichael was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood to life in prison for committing a federal hate crime in the 2020 killing of the 25-year-old Black man.

“I feel every shot every day that I wake up,” said Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper Jones.

Months after they were sentenced to life in prison for murder, the three white men who chased and killed Arbery in a Georgia neighbourhood faced a second round of criminal penalties, largely symbolic, for federal hate crimes committed in the deadly pursuit.

Judge Godbey Wood scheduled back-to-back hearings to individually sentence each of the defendants, starting with Travis McMichael, who shot Arbery after the street chase was initiated by his father and joined by a neighbour.
