Live reaction outside a Georgia courthouse as a verdict was reached Wednesday in the trial of three white men charged with chasing and killing Ahmaud Arbery after the 25-year-old Black man was jogging in their neighbourhood.
The jury received the case around midday Tuesday and spent six hours deliberating before adjourning for the night without a verdict. They resumed deliberations on Wednesday morning.
Travis McMichael was found guilty of all counts, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment. His father Gregory McMichael was found not guilty of malice murder, but found guilty on all other counts including felony murder and aggravated assault. The third man, William “Roddie” Bryan who had filmed part of the encounter between the men and Arbery, was found guilty of six counts including felony murder and false imprisonment.
Greg and Travis McMichael told police they suspected Arbery was a fleeing burglar when they armed themselves and jumped in a pickup truck to chase him on Feb. 23, 2020. William “Roddie” Bryan, who is also being tried, joined the pursuit when they passed his house and recorded cellphone video of Travis blasting Arbery at close range with a shotgun as Arbery threw punches and grabbed for the weapon.
Each of the men is charged with murder and other crimes.
