From bans on social media sites, to internet blackouts and harassment campaigns against journalists – increasingly governments across Africa are making it harder to speak out.
Last year there were more than 20 shutdowns across a dozen countries. In Chad a block on social media lasted over a year.
This year, authorities in Niger, Congo and Senegal cut access to the internet during elections and protests. Now, after blocking Twitter, Nigeria says social media companies must be licensed by the broadcasting commission.
And in Rwanda, Human Rights organizations warn that the repression is more targeted. More than 20 bloggers and YouTubers have been detained or disappeared within the past year.

Niger or the Niger, officially the Republic of the Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa named after the Niger River. Over 80% of its land area lies in the Sahara Desert. The country’s predominantly Muslim population of about 22 million live mostly in clusters in the far south and west of the country. The capital and largest city is Niamey, located in Niger’s southwest corner.
Nigeria, an African country on the Gulf of Guinea, has many natural landmarks and wildlife reserves. Protected areas such as Cross River National Park and Yankari National Park have waterfalls, dense rainforest, savanna and rare primate habitats. One of the most recognizable sites is Zuma Rock, a 725m-tall monolith outside the capital of Abuja that’s pictured on the national currency.
Rwanda, officially the Republic of Rwanda, is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley where the African Great Lakes region and East Africa converge. One of the smallest countries on the African mainland, its capital city is Kigali.
Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country in West Africa. Senegal is bordered by Mauritania in the north, Mali to the east, Guinea to the southeast, and Guinea-Bissau to the southwest.
Like other post-colonial African states, the country includes a wide mix of ethnic and linguistic communities, with the largest being the Wolof, Fula, and Serer people, and the Wolof and French languages acting as lingua francas.
