One year after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, what’s the situation on the ground? From her Kabul office, Mary-Ellen McGroarty, World Food Program’s Country Director in Afghanistan, describes for “The Hub with Wang Guan” the “fragile peace” and the massive humanitarian crisis. Almost half the population faces food scarcity, 6 million are one step away from famine, and women are sacrificing themselves to feed their children. A “heartbreaking” development is schools closing for teenage girls and jobs for women, many of whom are their families’ sole breadwinners. But Afghans don’t want aid for day-to-day needs. They want to be helped to build a future for themselves. Watch the show to learn about how projects are trying to create a “functional economy” that will be sustainable.
