The US has signed a deal with Taliban insurgents that could pave the way for a full withdrawal of foreign soldiers from Afghanistan over the next 14 months, and represent a step toward ending the 18-year war in the country.
Under the agreement, the US would draw its forces down to 8,600 from 13,000 in the next four months, with the remaining US forces withdrawing in 14 months.
A complete pull-out, however, would depend on the Taliban meeting their commitments to prevent terrorism.
Former president George W Bush ordered the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks.
