Chinese President Xi Jinping has made a pitch for a ‘peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan’ on the second day of talks with Taliban leaders.
The talks being held in China also include representatives from regional nations such as Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Iran and some others.
Its being seen as an attempt by Beijing to play a leading role in the region while guiding the future of a country with strategic significance for itself and its neighbors. We’ll talk more about that in detail but here’s a quick look at what Xi Jinping said. China wants to incorporate Afghanistan into its broader geopolitical projects in the region, says Velina Tchakarova of the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy.

Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre (650-mile) coastline along the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest, and China to the northeast. It is separated narrowly from Tajikistan by Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor in the northwest, and also shares a maritime border with Oman.
Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country located in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It extends from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in the south.

As a recognised nuclear-weapon state, the country possesses the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear weapons.
Tajikistan is a country in Central Asia surrounded by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It’s known for rugged mountains, popular for hiking and climbing. The Fann Mountains, near the national capital Dushanbe, have snow-capped peaks that rise over 5,000 meters. The range encompasses the Iskanderkulsky Nature Refuge, a notable bird habitat named for Iskanderkul, a turquoise lake formed by glaciers.
The Taliban or Taleban, who refer to themselves as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is a Deobandi Islamist movement and military organization in Afghanistan, currently waging war within the country. Since 2016, the Taliban’s leader has been Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada.
Xi Jinping has been the President of China since 2013 and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) since 2012.
