The high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly will be a key opportunity to bring to the forefront the relevance of the Beijing Declaration and move the needle on implementation. Attended by global leaders on “Accelerating the Realization of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of all Women and Girls” the event will showcase how building equal and inclusive societies is more urgent than ever, as the COVID-19 pandemic ravages lives and livelihoods.  Under the theme, “Accelerating the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”, this high-level meeting of the General Assembly aims to demonstrate the political will and leadership that will bring about the transformative change needed to address root causes, structural barriers, discriminatory practices and social norms that underpin discrimination and inequality. The event will also showcase concrete actions, plans and commitments to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by 2030, including in support of the role of civil society organizations and youth. 9–10 a.m.: Opening segment 10 a.m.–6.30 p.m.: Plenary segment 6.30p.m.–7 p.m.: Closing segment The opening segment will feature statements by the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, a representative of China as the host country of the Fourth World Conference on Women, the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, the Chair of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the Chair of the Working Group of the Human Rights Council on the issue of discrimination against women in law and in practice and the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on violence against women, its causes and consequences. In addition, an eminent high-level champion of gender equality, a representative from civil society and a young woman leader, all to be selected by the President of the Assembly in consultation with Member States, will take part.
