Following a DNA breakthrough, the previously unidentified sailor has been named as Able Seaman Thomas Welsby Clark.

His remains were found on Christmas Island three months later. DNA samples collected from his body in 2006 have been extensively tested over recent years with reseachers able to identify two living direct relatives. Able Seaman Clark becoming the only person to be identified of the 645 men who perished on board.
