80 years to the day after Australian warship HMAS Sydney sunk off Western Australia, the only body to be recovered from the tragedy has now been identified.
Following a DNA breakthrough, the previously unidentified sailor has been named as Able Seaman Thomas Welsby Clark.
HMAS Sydney sank following an intense battle with a German merchant raider in 1941, with Able Seaman Clark believed to be the only sailor to have made it to a life raft, but later died at sea aged just 21.
His remains were found on Christmas Island three months later. DNA samples collected from his body in 2006 have been extensively tested over recent years with reseachers able to identify two living direct relatives. Able Seaman Clark becoming the only person to be identified of the 645 men who perished on board.
