The leader of Italy’s centre-left Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, conceded defeat in the election which saw the country’s hard-right coalition led by Giorgia Meloni take the lead. ‘Today is a sad day for Italy,’ says Letta at a press conference in Rome as Brothers of Italy, a party with neofascist origins, was expected by polls to secure a comfortable victory in both houses of parliament.
