United Nations published this video item, entitled “A Call for a New Social Contract: Centering Indigenous Cultural Expressions” – below is their description.
There are more than 476 million Indigenous people in over 90 countries around the globe.
This celebration of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples offers an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous culture through film, dance, song and the magnificent artwork on display at United Nations Headquarters.
Curated by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN Visitors Services, this event was made possible by Joe Baker, Executive Director, Lenape Center; The New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations; Jalena Keane-Lee: Director, “Standing Above the Clouds”; PBS; and Kathryn Lipke Vigesaa: Director, Producer of “Molas in Transition: The Textile Art of Kuna Women”.
The artwork featured at United Nations Headquarters is the Mola Tapestry, by a collective of Kuna women, Panama; the Inukshuk, by Kellypalik Pishuktie, Canada; the Tukutuku panels, by Christina Wirihana and the Māori Weavers of Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aoteara, New Zealand; and the Kusikawsay, by Mario Opazo, Colombia.
The footage from Jalena Keane-Lee’s short film “Standing Above the Clouds” features Pua Case, Hāwane Rios, Kapulei Flores and the Protect Mauna Kea Ohana. Learn more about the film here and the movement here. You can also watch the film on the PBS website, here.
