Ceremonies were held in Washington, D.C., at the Pentagon and Congress, as well as New York City on Friday to mark the 19th anniversary of the terror attacks that destroyed the World Trade Towers and damaged part of the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Joe Biden and Vice-President Mike Pence both joined the ceremony at the former site of the World Trade Towers, while a separate ceremony was held at The Pentagon, with the U.S. Secretary of Defense addressing the mourners. Pence also attended another ceremony at the 9/11 museum in New York City. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when two hijacked jets slammed into the Twin Towers, with a third hitting the Pentagon and a fourth crashing in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. 9/11 is the abbreviated moniker for the civilian airliner attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, USA, on 11th September 2001. The Pentagon was also targeted and a fourth airliner crashed when passengers overpowered hijackers. Around 3000 people died as a result of the airliner hijackings which took place on 9/11.
