7NEWS Australia published this video item, entitled “42,000 rapid antigen tests stolen from Botany, Zeshi Wu charged by police | 7NEWS” – below is their description.
Police fear the theft of half a million dollars worth of rapid antigen tests may be the start of a worrying trend as demand for the product soars. A 28-year-old man has now been charged with stealing more than 40,000 kits, many still haven’t been recovered.
Investigators from South Sydney Police Area command raided a self storage facility last night at Rosebery and allegedly recovered some of the stolen property that they found in two storage rooms.
Three men were arrested and later released. A fourth man Zeshi Wu presented himself to police last night and was charged with dishonestly obtaining property by deception. It’s alleged a consignment of 42,000 rapid antigen tests were taken from the Air Menzies loading facility on Tuesday.
Exactly how the thief gained access and was able to leave with the shipment is still being investigated.
It’s suspected they were destined to be sold on the black market at a time when demand for these COVID self-testing kits is at an all time high.
Wu’s lawyer successfully argued the case against her client was circumstantial and offered $40,000 as surety. He’ll be released on bail later today.
There are still a large number of those RATS unaccounted for and police haven’t ruled out making further arrests.
