FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “2021 César Awards ceremony held amid calls for more diversity” – below is their description.
France’s most prestigious film awards, les Césars, are presented tonight. This year was a chance for redemption as 2020’s ceremony was marked by protests, resignations and walk-outs over the nomiation and subsequent best director win for Roman Polanski. But this year’s nominees don’t offer many signs of progress for women and minorities at the awards. Both the best film and best director categories include only one woman. And there are still zero black board members overseeing the Cesar Academy. Franco-nigerien actress, director and producer Magaajyia Silberfeld joins Charli James on this edition of Eye on Africa. She has become a voice in the French film industry against the stereotyping of black artists and characters.
