12-year-old Indian mountaineer Kaamya Karthikeyan managed to reach the summit of Mt. Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America accompanied by her father on Tuesday. The mountain a summit elevation of 6,960 metres (22,237 ft).
Karthikeyan was forced by her guides to turn around between camps 2 and 3, due to suspected altitude sickness, which she call an “unfortunately wrong” decision. She was then cleared by doctors back at camp 2.
The original schedule was also delayed as Karthikeyan and her father were forced to go to court to obtain permission for the minor to scale the mountain, despite already having conquered several high altitude Himalayan treks, including Roopkund (5,020 m), and and Chandrasheela (4,000 m). She reached the Everest base camp (5,346 m) at the age of 10.
